The Lion and the Mouse

A large lion was sleeping peacefully under a tree, and a small mouse ran across the ground nearby. Without noticing where he was going, the mouse ran right over the paw of the lion and woke him up.

The lion woke suddenly, letting out a roar, and grabbed the mouse quickly in one huge paw. "How dare you wake me," the lion growled, staring down at the tiny animal trembling in his grip. The mouse was terrified and could barely speak.

"Please forgive me," the mouse said in a small voice. "I did not mean to disturb you. If you let me go, I promise that one day I will help you in return." The lion found this idea very funny. A creature so small could never help a lion.

Still, the lion was in a good mood, and the request amused him enough that he opened his paw and let the mouse run free. The mouse thanked him and quickly disappeared among the tall grass, grateful to be alive.

Weeks later, the lion was walking through the forest and stepped in a rope trap set by hunters. The rope tightened around his body, and no matter how hard he pulled, he could not break free. He roared loudly, but the sound only echoed through the trees.

The little mouse heard the roar far away and recognized the voice. He ran as fast as he could toward the sound and found the lion caught in the trap, struggling and exhausted from fighting the rope.

"Stay still," the mouse said. He climbed onto the rope and began to chew through it, using his sharp teeth. Piece by piece, the rope broke apart, until finally the lion was able to stand up and walk free.

The lion looked at the mouse and felt new respect. "I once thought you were too small to help me," he said, "but you saved my life today." Even the smallest friend can offer help that truly matters.
